When evaluating Soft Armor channel linings, it is vitally important to assess their erosion resistance in both the unvegetated and fully vegetated phases. For analyzing unvegetated soft armor linings in channels where full vegetation establishment is expected within 3 months of installation, the projected shear stress may be based on discharge from a 2-yr storm event. However, for extended or unknown vegetation establishment periods, or for a more conservative design, use of a lower frequency storm event or the project’s design storm event may be warranted to ensure adequate channel protection before vegetation establishment.
